South Dakota driver's license requirements
As explained on the South Dakota Department of Public Safety website:
- You must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
- Provide proof of a permanent South Dakota address
- If you're 65 or older, you'll also need a vision statement that's less than a year old. The DPS Vision Statement Form must be filled out to record the results.
- Drivers who wear bioptic lenses cannot renew their licences online.
- If you match specific criteria outlined on the DPS website here, you may be required to visit a Driver Licensing location.
South Dakota driver's license requirements for new applicants and transfers from out of state
If you are a new applicant, a non-U.S. citizen, or a transfer from another state, you must provide proof of lawful status in the United States in the form of a certified U.S. birth certificate (state certified only; photocopies and hospital-issued certificates will not be accepted), a valid, non-expired U.S. Passport/Passport Card, a Certificate of Citizenship/Naturalization, a Permanent Resident Card, an Employment Author If your name differs from what appears on your proof of lawful status document, you'll need to demonstrate the progression of each name change by submitting a certified copy of a marriage certificate (from a government entity, not the church), a divorce decree, and/or a court order for each name change. We can only accept genuine certified documents; photocopies will not be accepted.
If you are a new applicant or a transfer from another state, and your current driver licence does not have a gold star in the upper corner, you must also provide your Social Security Card, a W-2, a 1099, or a pay stub. All of which should show your social security number.

If you are a South Dakota resident who travels full time, in addition to the standard documents, you’ll also need to provide:
- A completed Residency Affidavit
- A receipt from a South Dakota hotel, motel, campground, or RV park proving one night of stay in the previous year. Your name and South Dakota address must be included on the receipt.
- One document proving your personal mailbox (PMB) service address, no older than one year. This document could be a PMB business receipt or a piece of mail having your PMB address on it (cannot be handwritten). Virtual addresses and virtual postal addresses are not acceptable.

South Dakota commercial driver's license
Applicants must apply for a CDL at a state driver exam station. Required documents include:
- A license application form completed (in English or in Spanish)
- Other required documents and a completed medical certificate form (if applicable)
- Two documents in your name proving your physical/residential address (cannot be handwritten documents). Documents must bear your name and be no older than a year. A utility bill, paystub, rent receipt, phone bill, bank statement, mortgage document, homeowner's policy, or tax document are all examples of these.
- $33 application fee plus $15 for each endorsement knowledge test
- If you're 65 or older, you'll also need a vision statement that's less than a year old. The DPS Vision Statement Form must be filled out to record the results.

CDL driving tests must be taken at a third-party testing facility and booked at least two business days ahead of time. Before taking a driving test, you must drive for 14 days on a commercial learner's permit. The cost of a third-party tester is $90 + tax.
South Dakota driver's licenses for full time travelers
If you plan to visit South Dakota you'll likely need to schedule an appointment at Department of Safety at the nearest Driver Exam Station. You can renew your license/ID card or apply for a duplicate license/ID card online or by mail if you are a South Dakota RVer.
You'll also need to provide the following documents in addition to the normal renewal documents:
